Session 4 - Life Extension: Prince TLP Life Extension for Continued Services
Date & Time
Thursday, October 7, 2021, 8:00 AM - 8:30 AM

Global crude oil prices have stabilized since 2017. However, they are still much lower than the prices prior to mid-2014 and market conditions are still very challenging. Oil and natural gas producers continuously strive to control costs. To maximize the return on their capital investment and continue to extract reserves on legacy fields, many owners and operators are looking for ways to extend the service lives of ageing assets. The Prince Tension Leg Platform (TLP) is currently operated in the Ewing Bank Block 1003 in the U.S Gulf Mexico. The production platform is currently owned and operated by Enven Energy Corporation (Enven). The production platform was installed in August 2001 and was originally designed for 20 years. EnVen has requested that ABSG Consulting to lead the effort to identify U.S. regulatory requirements and conduct life extension assessments for extending the Prince TLP’s service life for an additional 15 years beyond the current 20 years’ service life i.e. until year 2036. The reason for pursuing service life extension is due to the fact that the field that currently flows into Prince continues to have strong performance and shows signs of producing beyond 2021. Additionally, there are potential future discoveries in the area of Prince which may yield the desire for tieback into the TLP. The purpose of a life extension assessment is to understand the history of the facility and its current physical condition to determine its structural integrity and outline what is needed for the unit to be maintained in accordance with certain rules and standards. The life extension project began with a plan of a series of potential engineering assessments for the hull structures, mooring systems, major hull/topsides interfaces, and riser systems. In addition, a baseline inspection plan was developed to guide the baseline inspection activities for the purpose of the TLP life extension. Finding of the baseline inspections could be incorporated in the engineering analyses and subsequent mitigation phases. The life extension assessments were carried out according to U.S. regulatory requirements. At the end of the life extension effort, Enven seeks BSEE approval for life extension of the hull, the mooring systems, and risers. The purpose of this presentation is to present the process of the Prince TLP life extension assessments and the challenges that we experienced. Our experience could provide industry with a better understanding of the technical requirements for life extension of floating production assets, which will have a long-term impact on future designs or selection of such facilities.
