Sparta Project Director
Bio
Marcus McKinney has worked at Shell for more than 26 years, starting his career as an electrical engineer supporting Deepwater assets in the Gulf of Mexico. He spent 18 years working various positions (electrical engineer, concept engineer, project engineer, commissioning manager and project manager) on many Deepwater Gulf of Mexico greenfield projects as well as Shell’s venture into the Arctic. Marcus is exceptionally proud of his accomplishments as both the electrical lead and commissioning manager on the Perdido Spar, offering rewarding challenges and pushing the envelope in engineering technology. He was afforded the opportunity to see the project through the full life cycle, from Concept to Execution and start up.
In 2014, Marcus moved to Shell’s Downstream projects as the GM of Engineering for the Americas. In this role, he focused on minimizing non-value adding activities, maximizing engineering efficiencies and simplifying ways of working with Owner’s Team & EPCs. In 2018, he moved to a global role as the GM of Projects & Engineering Excellence for Downstream & Unconventional Projects. In this role, he was tasked with steering improvement initiatives and driving competitiveness across the global Downstream portfolio. In 2019, he returned to his Deepwater roots and is now currently the Project Director for Sparta. Sparta is Shell’s newest Gulf of Mexico Deepwater greenfield play and Shell’s 1st 20kpsi platform. Once again, offering Marcus numerous challenges and spearheading technological breakthroughs.
Marcus has a curious demeanor – he’s a passionate learner and is driven on excelling and beating the competition.
Outside of work, Marcus enjoys spending almost all of his time with what he calls his “5 Fs” - Faith, Family, Friends, Football and Food. His wife and 2 college age boys keep him occupied and grounded. In his spare time, he devotes it to his love of music, archery and considers himself a Game of Thrones superfan.
