Description

I think everyone can agree that 2020 was a very unusual year. COVID impacted nearly everyone, and everything we do in some way. Some of those impacts small, some extremely large. One such impact was to Anchor’s plans for our Ph4 HAZOP. Coming into 2020 we had a strong plan in place on how we were going to execute on our topsides, hull, and subsea HAZOPs. Overall we had 10+ weeks of study time planned for our team to participate in. Attendee list size ranging from 10 to 20+. Executing on these studies was going to be difficult enough, even with all of the knowledge we had of how to perform these studies from our past experiences in completing them. But then we were told to go home. We were told we can’t meet in person. We didn’t know when things would return to “normal”. So as a major capital project what to do? Everything we had planned to execute on, and how to do it, no longer fit within the confines of a work from home environment. We had a schedule to meet, and delays on that schedule could result in devastating impacts to the project. Understanding this, the team went to work in developing a brand new process for how to conduct HAZOPs virtually. The 1st challenge being, how do we do this when we’re not in the same room? A key component of the HAZOP process is open communication among the team. We were now presented with a virtual environment, that was new to many, which could heavily impact the idea of open communication. If we failed at open communication, we could end up impacting the quality of a safety study that is instrumental in ensuring a safe operating facility for the lifetime of its operation. So we embarked on a journey to understand how we can do this, and do it well. Through this presentation, we hope to share how we successfully executed on our HAZOPs, and how there may be opportunities in the future to leverage learnings from the challenges we faced to do things differently if warranted. Our learnings and success also make us examine through this presentation - is this the way for the future for the industry? How do we leverage our collective learnings and forge a new path ahead that benefits the collective industry?
