Description

Oxy has several facilities that have been producing for 20 or more years that require life extension approvals from BSEE. This presentation will cover some of the unique challenges and innovative solutions that have been implemented in order to progress the life extension approvals. A life extension request for the Marlin TLP export oil and gas steel catenary risers (SCRs) was approved in 2021. ECA methods were used, and in-line tooling was developed to detect fatigue cracking in critical areas of the SCRs. The methods used to evaluate the SCRs, inspection requirements, tooling development and qualification, execution of inspection and lessons learned will be presented. A baseline inspection of the Horn Mountain spar soft tank revealed the anodes were significantly depleted and intervention would be required to safely achieve life extension goals. A short-term retrofit anode system was implemented as a pilot program for other future potential anode retrofit projects. The installation of all retrofit anodes was successfully completed, and an immediate cathodic potential reading improvement was achieved. Lessons learned were captured and summarized for future campaigns.
